General:

Main international airport for the country.

Appearance:

At time of visit Dublin airport was undergoing a massive facelift. The sections that had been done looked good but the areas still under redevelopment looked a bit of a mess a false ceiling gave the airport a very dark and claustrophobic feel (2002). By 2017 there was still significant amounts of refurbishment going on and in places it didn't look like much had changed

Arriving in what can only be described as a cross between a coach station (the planes pull up to the terminal and you step down off of the plane, across the tarmac and into the gate) and a giant mutated conservatory (octagonal structure with no internal pillars). Unlike other airports I have been to arriving and departing passengers mix (probably only in this part of the airport I would assume international arrivals from other countries go through the normal procedures). Ireland and UK effectively have no border restrictions and passports were not checked instead just waived through. (2002) ***N.B. Recently UK flights are now landed as international flights and by 2017 full immigration and customs checks in place***

International
The planes from the UK park out at quite a remote terminal and it's a lengthy walk along a long corridor to reach the immigration area and from there through to the dark baggage reclaim area that was still, after 15 years, undergoing major rennovation works

Immigration was speedy and well staffed

The baggage reclaim hall is large, but is still undergoing major rennovation so is very dark and cramped

Partly hidden by building works at the time the exit from the baggage hall is via the usual red/green/blue channels, with a significant staff presence from Irish customs.

Regular express buses link the airport with the city centre and take approximately 30 minutes.

This was the main area undergoing modernization and as such had a dank, dark and depressing feel to it. Large blocks of check in desks but all clearly signed to find your area. Couple of Cafe's/Restaurants before you reach passport control. Beyond passport control it becomes a bit of a jumble of shops and pathways to the 3 departure sections of the airport. Back down to the conservatory for UK flights. One booth selling tea/coffee pastries etc.

International
Not used.

Couple of bars land-side. Once you are through to air-side there is only a small booth selling tea and coffee and a small selection of alcoholic beverages.

Couple of Cafe's/Restaurants land-side. Air-side there are no restaurants in the UK and Ireland departures lounge. There is a small booth serving coffee and snacks.

Small selection of shops on the land-side and a few as you walk through to the departures lounge air-side. Not much in the UK and Ireland departures lounge.

The toilets are clean and well maintained.
