Located on the coast about 9KM North West of the city this seaside town is set amongst large dunes and straddles the mouth of the Oude Rijn river that runs through Leiden.

Bus route 431 runs from Leiden Centraal Station to the seafront in Katwijk every 15 minutes during the week and every 30 minutes at weekends, journey times are about 20 minutes. Route 90 runs from Leiden Centraal Station and takes a more scenic route, as well as serving the whole of the seafront at Katwijk, including stopping near the mouth of the Rhein.
